Breathe Better Indoor Air

Is Your Filter Failing to Filter?

It comes as no surprise that it's easier to stay comfortable in an airtight, energy-efficient home. But there is a problem. When we seal in our ideal indoor temperature and humidity levels, we are also trapping air pollutants known as Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). VOCs can cause headaches, nose and throat irritations, burning or itching eyes, and in severe cases they can even damage the liver, kidneys, and central nervous system.

VOCs come from many items you have in your home; paint, cleaning and disinfecting products, carpeting, wood preservatives, air freshener, aerosol sprays, dry cleaned clothing, and hobby supplies. When you look around your home at these items, it's hard to believe they are so harmful. But the US Environmental Protection Agency estimates that indoor air is, on average, two to five times dirtier than outdoor air. So, while we're doing our best to control the humidity and temperature in our homes, we're also allowing various pollutants and harmful fumes to stagnate and accumulate indoors. The question: How can we bring in fresh air without bringing in unwanted humidity and unpredictable temperatures of the great outdoors?

The answer is an Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV) with humidity control. The ERV is specifically designed to remove stale indoor air without sacrificing comfort or energy efficiency. By constantly bringing in a supply of fresh air, an ERV reduces their level of VOCs and other indoor contaminants, meaning you can maintain ideal conditions and enjoy cleaner air at the same time.

Most of us will spend more than half our lives inside our homes, so clean indoor air should be a high priority. Be sure to ask you B&R Service for more information about indoor air pollution an how easy it is to stay comfortable while you freshen up your home with an ERV!

There's no doubt about it, just like our cars, if we want to keep our HCAC equipment working properly, we need to perform routine maintenance on it. Which means filter changes and seasonal tune-ups.

Since many of us would prefer not to be bothered with routine maintenance, or simply don't have the time, it's a good idea to ask B&R Service about a service maintenance contract. Among other money saving benefits of a service contract, the filter will be changed or cleaned as part of a scheduled checkup. The frequency of theis maintenance will depend upon the type of filter, the quality of air flowing through that filter, and how often you run your heating and colling system.
